Episode 119 - James Ockelford (North Brewing Co.)

Episode 119 - James Ockelford (North Brewing Co.)

This week's featured artist is James Ockelford the founder of the UK branding and design firm Refold. We came to learn of him through his work with North Brewing Co. and have been following along ever since. A fun story of how he got started through music and creating visuals for bands and doing something that he loved.

Not only does James support the vision and visuals for breweries and brands, but he is a fan of the craft and supporter of others in the space and industry which is refreshing and wonderful. In August of last year he finalized his creation an impressive book ‘The Crushable Canvas’, which he was so kind to send to me. It meant the world to me and is inspiring us to push forward with a book about this project too.

Another friend made in another country. One of the joys of this project and really more than I could have ever imagined when we were brainstorming this project in ’16. So many amazing artists and designers from all over and our job is to share them with you each week. Not a bad job at all.

Episode 118 - Pat Henzy (Abomination Brewing Co.)

Episode 118 - Pat Henzy (Abomination Brewing Co.)

This week's featured artist is Pat Henzy. We came to learn of him through the recommendations of fellow Philly artists and our listeners. A great episode that looks at how he got started in his career, how fatherhood impacted his art and shares a little behind the scenes on his process and perspective. A humble and kind guy who has been a supporter of the project and was a no-brainer guest to include in Season 11.

Episode 117 - Dev Parker (18th Street Brewery)

Episode 117 - Dev Parker (18th Street Brewery)

This week’s featured artist is Dev Parker, the Director of Design at 18th Street Brewery. When he’s not designing labels he can be found doing a slew of others things including but definitely not limited to tattoos, playing in his band Parker Band, branding and design, roofing and being a dad. To say Dev’s a busy man is an understatement.

We talk about inking, black and white aesthetic, making music and just enjoying life. A humble perspective on life and hard work as well as a bunch of questions from me about inking and a shared love of SPF 100. And a reveal of one of his favorite artists - Clue #1 - a letter in the alphabet | Clue #2 - to run fast is to be

Episode 116 - Drew Mullen (Foam Brewers)

Episode 116 - Drew Mullen (Foam Brewers)

This week’s featured artist is Drew Mullen. Drew is a CT based artist who I happen to connect with over 5 years ago at a Bridgeport, CT disc golf course and I have been following his career ever since. One of his main mediums of focus is scratchpad, which from the jump I was drawn to for its use of black and white and depth. Drew has worked with many breweries including but not limited to The Alchemist, Foam and Brewport as well as being a high school art teacher, father and avid disc golfer.

A great discussion about life, art and the Boston Red Sox. The second of our season 10 teacher showcases passion and love for something bigger than one’s self. We discuss how he got started working with the Alchemist and Foam, which to me is a great example and lesson for folks who are always asking how they can break into the industry. It isn’t easy. You have to work hard and continue to push yourself.

Episode 115 - Benny Miller (ShuBrew)

Episode 115 - Benny Miller (ShuBrew)

This week’s featured artist is Benny Miller. We came to learn of this artist through our friends over Cans Pittsburgh who included The Robotic Wolf IPA from ShuBrew in a beer mail box as an extra. I immediately was drawn to the label and loved that it linked to the artist right on the can. Great promo and support of the artist, but also makes my life a lot easier from a research perspective.

He and I spoke last night just a few days ago about his love of art, how art class was his spot and how he has come full circle to be a high-school art teacher in Pittsburgh which allows him to do something he loves, pay the bills and explore his other passions which we would both describe as fan art realism.

Learn about what his next level is going to be, why he creates the prints that he does and advice for someone looking to make a career in art. An honest and laid back conversation with someone who is working in one of the most honorable yet under appreciated professions in the land, teaching. As summer approaches and end of the year for many schools this a great chance to celebrate these special individuals.
